Just like most homes in America today, I have a garbage disposal in my kitchen. I have recently started noticing a strange smell coming from it. I have also noticed that it is not working quite as well as it used to. I have heard from a few people that you can actually clean your garbage disposal yourself. I have tried looking on the internet and have found a few different ways, but I do not want to try any of them unless I know they actually work. I was wondering if you could give me a few methods that clean your garbage disposal and actually work. Seeing as you are a residential plumbing company I figure you are the best resource for this. Thank you so much.

Dear Dirty Disposal,

Yes, you are correct. After awhile of use, garbage disposals just do not work like they used to after being used so much. And yes there are many different ways you can clean it. Here at Orange County Plumbing we do recommend a few different ways of cleaning your garbage disposal. We think these are the three best ways to do is and they all consist of items you probably already have in your home.

The first method we recommend involves half a cup of baking soda, a cup of vinegar, and a teapot full of boiling water. You will first want to pour the baking soda into the drain. You will then want to carefully pour the vinegar on top of that. You should then plug the drain with the plastic plug. The solution will start to fizz and will make some noises, but this is all normal. Let that sit and fizz for a few minutes. You will then want to pour the boiling water into the drain to wash out the baking soda and vinegar.

The second method involves a gallon of water and a tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach. You will want to mix the two items together. Very carefully you will pour this mixture down the drain, on top of the garbage disposal. You should let this mixture sit in the disposal for a few minutes. After this you should run the cold water for a few minutes to clean out the chlorine.

The last way is not only a great way to clean the blades but also to make the disposal and kitchen smell great. All you will need to get is a handful of ice cubes and a few slices of some type of citrus fruit. You can use an orange, lemon, lime, or even a grapefruit. You will want to put the ice down the drain and follow it with a few slices of the citrus fruit with the skin still on. You should then run the disposal with it all in it for a few minutes. You will instantly notice your kitchen smelling like fantastic citrus fruit.
